Hydraulics is a topic in applied science and engineering dealing with the flow characteristics of liquids. In engineering, it refers to the use of a liquid for the transfer of signals, force or energy. The flow processes primarily refer to open systems such as canals, rivers, channels and lakes, but also to closed systems such as in pumps, pipelines and channel systems, and to the groundwater.
